POST CARD COLLECTION / POSKAARTVERSAMELING

The photos are sorted by country and should all be labelled decently, including for some the dates they were posted.

Some of these were damaged when I received them - someone was obviously a philatelist, and cut off/steamed off/removed the stamps off some of the cards, not only making it impossible to determine dates sent, but also
damaging some of the cards.

Most of these come out of a collection that came down the family line. Most of the cards were sent to one of my Boshoffs, Bessie (Elizabeth Louisa)Boshoff (*12.10.1890), who resided variously at the farms Fonteintje,
Boshoffshoop and Verfkraal near Reddersburg and Edenburg in the old O.R.C,as well as to "in-laws" Bender of the farm Vierfontein near Gum Tree. Station, also in O.R.C. She was my aunt.

Glynis explains:

My Great grandfather was William John COCK, born in March 1868 in Camborne, Cornwall. He was the son of William COCK and Arabella Douglas THOMAS. Other children were Eliza Jane Born 1870, Albertus born 1872 and Sarah Louise born 1876 all in Camborne.

William John COCK married Lucy THOMAS on 25 September 1889 in Camborne and they went on to have 3 children, William James, born 8 October 1890, Albertice born 1892 and Doris Edna born 1900. William John COCK had a Building & Contracting business called W.J. COCK & Sons.

This business was not doing so well and after the Anglo Boer War, my great grandfather decided to travel to certain parts of the world to see where he and his family could settle.

The Post Cards were sent back "home" to his daugther, Doris, in Cornwall from places like San Francisco, London, South Africa, Rhodesia, Las Palmas, Tenerife and Spain. Dating back to 1903.

Doris kept all the post cards together in an album, when she died in 1930 (died first) my gg grandfather had it in his possession, then Dorothy Tremeckna COCK inherited it when he died. Dorothy was the daughter of William James COCK's, the elder brother of Doris.

William James COCK married Katie Tremeckna TONKIN on 3 June 1911 and decided to come out to South Africa in the early 1920's with their young daughter Dorothy (who inherited the PC Album). My father William Ernest Leslie COCK was born in 1926 in Cape Town.

This album traveled out the South Africa from Cornwall when my grandparents arrived here and Dorothy kept it in a very good condition. Because I was very interested in the Family Tree, she gave it to me in the 1980's and said that it would be worth quite a bit of money in years to come.

Overall, there are over 200 Post Cards in the Album dating from 1903 to 1906. Some from Cornwall, England and a large variety from many parts of South Africa. I think my great grandfather loved the country very much and that is why he sent them back to his family in Cornwall to show what South Africa looked like.

I have treasured it over the years and the messages on the post cards written between my family members also tell a story on how they lived in those early days. Because they did not have telephones - a post card used to be their way and means of communicating.

Hope all that see these Post Cards of yester-year will enjoy the art of what the country and buildings looked like in those wonderful early days.

Enjoy

Glynis MILLETT-CLAY (nee COCK)
