In the 19th Century it was common for a double s to be written with a letter which looks like a modern written f, followed by a modern s; the untrained eye therefore reads it as fs, and not the correct ss. So Ross would look like Rofs, but actually it is Ross.

The person who signed as a witness is WJ van Heerden and not VD HEEVER
